community art projects

A City of Stirling SASA collaboration with me and Australian Islamic College (Dianella campus) Yr 10 students 2012.

The purpose of the project was to create a 2D recycled sock mural for a new building at the school and to give the girls a taste of a textile project where they could learn basic skills from creating their own yarn from brightly coloured socks, basic crocheting to make the lollipop shapes for their fantasy garden mural, basic sewing/stitching techniques and how to make a simple rag doll from socks.  The girl's developed personalities and an identity for their dolls and were interviewed about their doll's character and interests as part of the project's development. Personification of the girl's own hopes and dreams was an intesting development in this part of the project, generating conflict with their islamic cultural beliefs.

The project was conducted over a 9 week period finishing with a presentation where Narelda Jacobs from Channel 10 was invited to view their finished work and discuss issues of the importance of education, belief in achieving goals and working together in unity as a focus point for the girls thinking through the duration of this project.
